When it doubt, flex it out!
When it comes to vaulting, it's comes as an advantage to be able to have flexibility on your side or strength. Heck, if you have both flexibility and strength, good on ya mate! There are a lot of vaulters who started gymnastics or dance before or during their training as a vaulter.
Me, on the other hand....I had to work of it later in life. I still struggle with handstands because I have issues with walls. That is a story for another time.
I have taken gymnastics for about two years, but sadly had to lay off of it due to breaking my ankle last summer, and not knowing it was actually broken. And yes, as strange as it seems, I was told it was sprained by the gymnastics instructor at a clinic I attended last summer. I continued walking on it for a month before I went to a doctor to have an x-ray to find out there was a recently healed fracture. My bad. I have a high pain tolerance.
Trust me, I've broken fingers and walked around for days and the longest two weeks without knowing it was broken.
So, when it comes to flexibility for me, it took work. I am even taking ballet now until I feel I am ready to get back into gymnastics. I took several weeks on my own to learn how to do a split and I worked to get my bridges.
When it comes to down time, I have very little of it during the school semester between classes, work, my horse, artwork, and practice. I try to make time to work on small flex exercises. It's important if you want to keep the flex in those muscles.
